Independence Day – the Fourth of July!

240 years ago the founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence having voted to secede from British control two days earlier. This was an incredibly courageous act by the 13 colonies and their leaders as they knew full well that they would have to go to war to protect their freedom. Having rebelled two years earlier at the famous Boston Tea Party and engaged in minor battles thereafter, this was not going to end well for one of the participants. With less manpower, significantly less food, clothing and weapons and very little formal training, a scrappy bunch led by General George Washington prevailed with help from France and America won it’s Independence with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

Why is this Federal Holiday so important to us even today? Of course we all enjoy a day off from work, but that is not the point. All of our basic rights in this country were in jeopardy back then; including the freedom of religion, the freedom of speech and the concept of “taxation without representation” that we all learned about in grade school. Some times we take our freedom for granted, then we read and hear what is happening in other countries and we remember how good we have it in America. Our country has many issues that need to be fixed today, and despite a new President and Congress next January, they won’t be fixed overnight. But I remain optimistic that the spirit and passion that created this great country will once again rise up to fix our financial and social issues and allow the United States of America to remain as the greatest country on earth.

May you enjoy a Happy Fourth of July with family and friends!
